Using a simple thalamo-cortical network of neurons it is shown that the spatiotemporal activity of the network may be mapped onto a deterministic chaotic dynamics if the spatially averaged network activity is considered as a time series. It is suggested that the electroencephalogram results from such an averaging over the spatiotemporal activity of millions of neurons.
